Giving back is a major part of Origami Owl®. We take pride in knowing that single moms are breaking through the statistics, children between 11 and 17 are able to shine their entrepreneur spirit, and everyone involved get to tell their story with our lockets and designs. We admire all of our designers and our Owlettes, but one is standing out in particular today.
The Need To Give Back
Shea partnered with Project Sunshine to help spread sunshine to pediatric cancer patients. She joined Origami Owl as an Owlette at 11-years-old, and her entrepreneurship has skyrocketed, and so has her desire to give back to the community. It all started when her mom Dana was setting up a photo shoot for breast cancer research. Shea heard the survivor’s stories and felt compelled to do something – to help cheer them on as they battled through cancer.
“I wanted to help out so badly,” recalls Shea. “
Shea put together special Lockets and hand-wrote dozens of cards for the calendar participants to encourage them.
Then her idea took on a life of its own. Shea is a part of her school’s student council and has committed to avidly volunteering. An organization she had recently worked with stood out, so she emailed the nonprofit’s organizers at Project Sunshine. She wanted to create care packages for pediatric patients and their caregivers. The only way to do this was to be able to raise enough funds to reach their goal.
Spreading the Sunshine
Mother and daughter committed to raising $1000 in a month to complete their care packages. They offered giveaways, used Project Sunshine’s sun posters with the donor’s name on them, and Shea even donated her sales commissions to the cause. The duo hit their goal in just five days!
“It makes me feel very happy to be able to give back to people,” shares Shea, 12. “I want to be a paramedic when I grow up because I love helping people and have since I was a child (at 3).”
The care packages will include journals, stickers, markers, care dolls, and other activities. Shea will personally hand-write all of the accompanying cards. The packages themselves are assembled by hand by Dana and Shea.
